Spontaneous Human Combustion (SHC) describes the burning of a living human body without an apparent external source of ignition. Many TV programs from home and abroad have introduced some unexplained cases.
In 1964, Hellen who lived in London was found by his granddaughter after his body was almost burnt to ashes. When fire fighters arrived, the body was completely burnt. To their surprise, there was no other damage or soot around the place where the accident happened.
Another elderly person living in Pennsylvania, the United States, was burnt to death in 1966. When discovered, his body was burnt beyond recognition except for one of his legs. Like the case of Hellen, the only thing burnt was his body.
Three years later, another mysterious fire broke out from the stomach of an alcoholic who drank a lot in a pub in New York. His friends tried to extinguish the fire but failed. He finally died while receiving treatment in hospital. Police at first believed that his friends were suspects. However, they were cleared of the charges because the doctor assured the authorities that the fire really started from the stomach.
Although surviving SHC is very unusual, one incident in Brussels suggests that escaping death by the unexplained phenomenon is possible.
A man who was on his way to work smelled something burning in his car and stopped driving. He realized that his legs had caught by fire without causing him any pain. Starting from the legs, the fire expanded to the whole body, but he survived by asking people to help him. He was able to recover after surgery.
His medical team said that the cause of the accident could be oil which accidentally dropped on his legs. Like the other cases, supporting evidence was not found. Moreover, it is said that he had a similar experience a year later, so now he carries a fire extinguisher with him at all times.
